But if multiple people use the same account on your computer — maybe you share it with your family — this leaves your folders open for snooping. There's dozens of apps that let you encrypt your folders.
But luckily, Windows offers its own built-in options for password protecting folders. It's totally free and easy to password protect a folder in Windows. However, there are a few downsides. The first is that you need to be running Windows 10 Pro — Home version won't let you. The second is that once you set the password, there's no way to recover it if you forget it.
Open Windows Explorer and find the folder you want to password protect, and then right-click on it. At the bottom of the Advanced Attributes menu that appears, check the box labeled "Encrypt contents to secure data. On the "Confirm Attribute Changes" window, choose between "Apply changes to this folder only" or "Apply changes to this folder, subfolders and files. A notification prompting you to back up your file encryption key will appear.
Click "Backup now. Depending on the size and contents of the folder, it may take a while to complete. Your folder and all of its data are now password-protected by your account. For most Windows users, adding a password to a folder requires a third-party archiving utility or some form of compression software. It does a great job of password-protecting your more critical data.
The only catch to this tool is that you have to decompress the folder for the safety measures to activate. Step 1: Navigate to the 7-Zip download page and select the right download for you. Most users should opt for the bit x64 Windows build. Once downloaded, install it as you would any other software and run it. Alternatively, drag and drop the folder anywhere within the main 7-Zip interface. Step 3: Ignoring the bulk of presets in the resulting pop-up window, select zip from the drop-down menu directly beside the Archive Format option to ensure the folder remains compatible with computers without 7-Zip installed.
Click the OK button when finished and allow the utility to create a compressed, encrypted duplicate of the folder you wish to password protect. Any changes you make while the disk is mounted will automatically become both encrypted and password-protected upon dragging the disk to the Trash.
Step 1: Select Disk Utility from the Applications folder. You can also use Spotlight to search for it. The procedure is the same for files and folders. Open Windows Explorer and navigate to the folder you want to password-protect. Right-click on the folder. Select Properties from the menu. On the dialog that appears, click the General tab.
Click the Advanced button, then select Encrypt content to secure data. Click OK. Your Windows username and password will be used. Double-click the folder to ensure you can access it. It is not possible to use Windows to password-protect a folder in Windows 8 or Windows You will need to download third-party software or use a zipped folder. If you elect to use third-party software, be sure you download it from a reputable source.
Password-protecting a zipped file is a good solution if your version of Windows does not support password protection. If you put the files you'd like to protect in a zip file, you can then apply a password. When you hide a folder or file in Windows, the folder or file does not appear in the directory list, unless the Don't show hidden files, folders, or drives setting is unchecked. Right-click on the file or folder that you want to hide. Select Properties.
