How can a tailor alter a suit

Beware - this will result in a different alignment of the lapels and can be very noticeable and bizarre if the button is moved too much. A collar gap between the shirt and suit jacket Brendan Gallagher of Primer Magazine. A skilled tailor will be able to diagnose the problem, but many of the root causes of collar gaps are fundamental pattern-cut issues that are difficult and costly to fix.

When there is a dent under the shoulder where the shoulder seam meets the sleeve, there could be several underlying reasons.

The most likely one is that the jacket shoulder is too narrow. Whilst the shoulders can technically be extended to a certain degree, it is a major procedure and the outcome cannot be guaranteed.

Other reasons could be that:. Any shoulder alteration involves a lot of deconstruction and reconstruction. Remedies, where possible, will be expensive. Want to find out more? Avoid this by having the jacket taken in through the side-seams — it will fit the whole thing to your frame, and clean-up any bagginess.

Most alternations tailors can pin a jacket to you and get it fitting like a glove inside a week. Keep in mind that even the slightest change in pitch requires the sleeve to be removed entirely to be tilted, so reserve this one for a blazer or sports jacket you see yourself wearing for many years to come. In an ideal world, your trousers should hang clean down to the bridge of your foot and sit neatly on top of the shoe , as Wilde describes.

Hemming suit trousers to the correct length is the easiest alteration in the book — any old tailor should be able to do this quickly and easily. If you struggle to get trousers with legs that are wide enough to fit without straining around your thighs, many brands will supply trousers with inlay down each side seam, which an alterations tailor can use to let out and widen the trousers — giving you a touch more room to move.

Adding darts subtle sewn-in folds to a shirt can instantly improve how it fits through the torso, tucking in excess fabric and giving you a sleeker silhouette. Always thought that crew neck would work better as a boat neck? Or maybe you want to kill the collar on your favourite button-down?

A good tailor can help you achieve both. Some shirts look better sans-chest pockets. Or, you know, learn how to do it in the first place.

Love your off-the-peg suit jacket but want to make yours more personal to you? A tailor might be able to help. Apart from perhaps an upended glass of rioja or a sticky-fingered child, few things wreck the appearance of your tailoring like overstuffed pockets.

If the temptation to overload every open seam is too much, it is possible to have them sewn shut. The problem is, you can only let-out an area of the garment if there is additional fabric available to work with under the seam — and most ready-to-wear manufacturers cut costs by leaving as little excess fabric in the garment as possible. On a side note, this is one of the advantages of a bespoke suit. To illustrate the basic idea behind altering a garment, below is an example of how a tailor would mark a seam during a fitting.

Below, we have an example of the opposite problem; the jacket looks a little too loose in the back notice the uneven pooling of fabric that could be smoothed out. We get a ton of questions about specific alterations, even pictures emailed to us sometimes. If I missed anything, feel free to ask specific questions in the comments section below.

Can the shoulders of a jacket be extended made larger? In theory, yes. Can the shoulders of a jacket be taken-in made smaller? The more you take-in the shoulder, the more you have to reshape the armhole, sleeve head, and chest to accommodate. The sleeves also get shorter by about half the amount you take-in the shoulder point-to-point. In theory, yes, but this involves re-cutting the shoulders to accommodate for the missing pad.

The collar keeps gapping off my neck, can this be fixed? Can a jacket be let-out made roomier in the midsection? Sure, if there is fabric available. Can a jacket be taken-in made slimmer in the midsection? The jacket is likely too small in the chest, or you stand with your arms slightly back.

Easy Jacket Tailoring Fixes These are fixes that you should consider par for the course. While this is an easy alteration, it can be time-consuming and is often not worth the money.

The alterations can go one of a couple of ways: Shorten Sleeves A tailor will generally give the option to shorten from the hem and lose the buttonhole functionality an easier, less expensive option or to maintain that functionality and shorten from the shoulder a more time-consuming and therefore more expensive option. Lengthen Sleeves The only option for lengthening the sleeves is to do so from the hem.

Hi Meredith, To the best of my knowledge, taking in a center seam will not do much, if anything, to correct jacket shoulders that are too wide.
