Reptile is not the only memorable Saurian to appear in the Mortal Kombat franchise. The female Saurian Khameleon made her appearance in Mortal Kombat Trilogy and has since then worked to resurrect her species. Khameleon has attempted to work with Reptile but failed to gain his companionship. Another character named Chameleon is possibly a male Saurian due to his similarities to Khameleon but it is unclear. Reptile's repulsive appearance and allegiance to the franchise's top baddies may guide fans to believe that he himself is evil.
This is not the case as Reptile does not go out of his way to inflict harm to others. Every terrible act Reptile has committed was simply in correspondence to his master's orders. Reptile follows the wishes of Shao Kahn in hope that he could one day resurrect or free his people.
Reptile does not crave power, nor does he have an insatiable bloodlust. He simply wishes to bring back his species and return to Zaterra to live in peace. In fact, a few of Reptile's endings result in him achieving his goal or suffering in an attempt to achieve it. Similar to Scorpion, he is not bad but instead blinded and misguided by his pursuit to revive his people.
The Saurians are a species that has existed for a long time dating back nearly 65 million years. Nearly everything concerning the Saurians is unknown such as their lifespan. This means that Reptile - and other Saurians - are possibly a million years old or at the very least ten thousand. The exact time that Zaterra was conquered is unclear but evidence reveals that it occurred in the distant past.
Even surviving Saurians are no longer able to remember their homeworld since they left it long ago. What is known is that Reptile is a survivor from this assimilation and there is a possibility that he was alive during the Saurians' time on Earthrealm.
Reptile's appearance has changed throughout each installment that he appeared in. In some, Reptile is depicted as a reptilian humanoid while in others he is much more beast-like. These changes were not random in fact Reptile has the ability to change between his humanoid and animalistic forms.
Reptile maintains humanoid form to avoid reverting into his primal state which is prone to mindless behavior.
This explains his change in design but not exactly why he changes between forms. Reptile's constant alterations between his humanoid and beastly form may be due to his isolation from the rest of his species. The Saurians have a close connection to the matriarch of their species, and it is hinted that prolonged separation can have adverse effects. This may be why Reptile seems to "devolve" into a more primal dinosaur-like state.
While in this form Reptile is significantly unstable and susceptible to maintaining it permanently. As one of the last living members of his species Reptile suffers from madness induced by isolation. He has endured the pain of losing his homeworld and a majority of species.
Reptile knows the effects of genocide and he hates those that slaughtered his people but ironically, he has committed this heinous act several times. Another notable member of Reptile's species is Khameleon — who, like Reptile, first appeared as a grey color-swap of Kitana — and possibly, Chameleon, who can shapeshift into every ninja color-swap character.
The movie does a good job setting up the vast universe found in the video games, but few of the characters' origins are meaningfully explored with real depth. Nicolas Ayala is a writer with a passion for blockbusters and big-screen adaptations.
The cheesier the movie, the better. When not writing, he's probably coming up with new ideas for the next writing sessions. By Nicolas Ayala Published Jun 09, Share Share Tweet Email 0. A tiny, little raptor creature, Reptile would appear a few times in the shadows, using his invisibility to fade into the background. When Liu Kang got too close, he spat acid into his eyes.
Late in the movie, Liu Kang grabbed the little guy and threw him at a statue…which…um…absorbed him and transformed into a guy in a ninja costume. This was in no way questioned or explained as a fight scene broke out.
Reptile lost, reverted to his salamander form, and Liu Kang stomped on him. Jax even namedropped Reptile, and it took me forever to even remember that technically, Defenders of the Realm was supposed to be a sequel to the first Mortal Kombat movie. All things considered, it was probably the better sequel, if only because the episode where Shang Tsung was resurrected was genuinely good. Everything about him and his race was beyond cheesy.
While Reptile and his people are just dudes in green ninja costumes, their true forms are still reptilian monsters, and the CGI makes the effects from the Mortal Kombat movie look like Jurassic Park.
Reptile would return in Mortal Kombat 4. Reptile was unmasked in his main costume, and even though his alternate costume was his classic ninja outfit, he at least had scales on his entire body. Reptile showed no remorse for all the lives he took and, while it was never shown, decided to work with the invading Shinnok. He begged Quan Chi to have Shinnok send him back in time so he could live with his Saurian people.
Quan Chi and Shinnok were both horribly offended that he would dare ask for anything in return for helping them kill Raiden, and Shinnok blew up his head in an act of anger. Welcome to Mortal Kombat.
It was explained in-story that he was devolving, which presumably was making him a bit dumber. Nitara used trickery to play Reptile and Cyrax against each other and use them towards her goal. Reptile caught on too late and unsuccessfully attempted to hunt them down. As all this was going on, the game made plenty of references to Onaga the Dragon King, the overlord who ruled Outworld before Kahn did. Reptile, after years as the ultimate follower, would end up serving Onaga as an underling.
Just not in the way he would have liked. It cracked open and an energy poured forth, enveloping Reptile. Despite having taken a more dinosaur-esque form in the past several games, the freed Reptile looked like his original human ninja self for some reason.
It was notable for giving Reptile a new design that best merged together his reptilian form with his old ninja outfit. Rather than wear a mask, he wore a series of black straps over his face, making him look more shabby and makeshift. It was a good look for him. The Mortal Kombat franchise kept it on the down low for the next few years, but then a short film Mortal Kombat: Rebirth hit the internet. More of a proof-of-concept for what would become the Mortal Kombat: Legacy web-series, the short was based on the idea of retelling Mortal Kombat as a grittier, relatively more realistic set of events.
There was no Outworld or magic.
